Kern's Clock is a popular Detroit landmark that was originally located at the corner of Woodward and Gratiot avenues. It adorned the entrance to the Ernst Kern Company department store and became a meeting place for Detroiters. The clock was erected in 1933 and was later restored and placed back in its original location in 2003. The Ernst Kern Company was founded in 1883 and eventually bought a five-story building at the corner of Gratiot and Woodward. In 1920, they acquired a neighboring nine-story building and demolished both to create a larger structure. The company was sold in 1957 and closed in 1959. The clock was stored and later restored by the Junior League of Detroit. It was temporarily removed in 1998 and reinstalled in its original location in 2003 by the Compuware Corporation.Generated from the website
