It was started in 1913 by Jacob Geerlings. In 1940, Jacob's son Henry Geerlings took over the farm and got his son involved. In 1988 his sons Jack, Dick, and Don took over the business from their father. Henry continue to to run the office until his death in 1998. Jack's son John joined the business full time in 1995 after earning his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Grand Valley State University Townline Poultry Farm is located in Zeeland, Michigan. Zeeland was the Baby Chick Center of the Midwest from the 1920s through the 1950s. Signs welcomed visitors of Zeeland to "The Baby Chick Center of the Midwest". In fact, Zeeland then had a population of 3, 000 people yet produced an astounding 18 MILLION baby chicks, ducks, and turkeys. There were over 60 hatcheries operating in Zeeland, Michigan. The industry shifted to Southern states in the 1960s because of cheaper grain and more affordable growing conditions. Townline Poultry Farm is the only large scale chick hatchery that has continued to operate in Michigan. Townline Poultry Farm survived and has prospered due to it great flexibility and diversity. We are truly a working and diversified farm. Not only do we hatch chicks in our hatchery, but also raise 350 acres of corn and soybeans for our feed. We have our own breeder flocks on site, at our hatchery, so we can closely monitor their health and production. We currently have about 20, 000 breeder hens that produce our hatching eggs.
