We are housed in a Victorian Gothic Church located in one of the improvised neighborhoods in Detroit. The Church and School buildings are in disarray, needing major repairs to the roof, windows, and in some instances, the flooring.Eighty ( 80% ) per cent of the church's membership are children, which is why it so important that our church doors remain open and why we need your help. The Historic Motor City Missionary Baptist Church was erected in 1891 and there has been no ongoing upkeep to the church. The Church doors have been open to the community for 40 years. Our Pastor, Reverend Johnny Lowe, is in his fifth ( 5 ) year of being pastor of this great church. The Historic Motor City Missionary Baptist Church is Detroit's only intact Victorian Gothic wood frame church. In 1979, our church received its Federal Designation as a Historical Site. On October 1, 1982, we received our state designation. On January 17, 2001, Praise be to God, we completed the process and received our local designation, making the church a fully historical site. On September 21, 2003, the church agreed to change its name to the Historic Motor City Missionary Baptist Church. The church survives as a testament to the tenacity of a congregation's commitment to saving our important part of Detroit's history. We have made application to the Historic Preservation Society to help restore our historic building; however, they have exhausted their funds. Therefore, we are asking our members, friends, faith-based community and Metropolitan Detroit area businesses to please join us in accepting this invitation to make our worship facilities more pleasant.
