Black River Preserve is a 121-acre public nature preserve located in Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan. It offers visitors a diverse range of southwest Michigan habitats, including deep ravines, beech-maple forests, streams, rolling uplands, and views of the big Black River. The preserve features 3.8 miles of dirt hiking trails, bridges, and boardwalks constructed by the dedicated volunteer group, the Black River Stewards. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing.
Protected in 2011 through a bargain sale, Black River Preserve is home to 400 plant species, 85 of which are native to Southwest Michigan. The property's 60 acres of wetlands are recognized as one of the top wetlands in Van Buren County, providing essential water quality and wildlife habitat functions. The preserve remains free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, with donations supporting its maintenance and conservation efforts.
