Newton Public Schools offers education to more than 11,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12. The district consists of over 20 schools that include elementary, middle and high schools. Its curriculum includes mathematics, family and consumer science, foreign language, language arts, media, reading, science, social studies, physical and health education and vocational programs. The sports activities offered by the district include baseball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, football, golf, hockey, swimming, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. The Brookline Housing Authority was founded in 1948 to provide housing for the veterans of World War II. Today, it houses more than 4,130 residents in over 920 apartment units and manages nearly 650 rental vouchers. The authority provides Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to qualified residents living in privately owned apartments. It offers child care, youth mentoring, and individual and family counseling services. The Brookline Housing Authority also provides summer employment programs. In addition, it conducts English as a Second Language classes.
