St. John the Evangelist Monastery Chapel

The MIT Chapel, designed by architect Eero Saarinen, is a unique and graceful cylindrical building that serves as a place of worship for the diverse MIT community. Its windowless design promotes an enclosed and inward-feeling atmosphere, while its undulating interior walls provide excellent acoustics. The Chapel features a stunning stained glass entryway, a solid marble altar, a domed skylight that reflects light onto a metal sculpture by Harry Bertoia, and a 768-pipe organ designed by Walter Holtkamp. The Chapel is open to all members of the MIT community for quiet observances and approved groups for services, initiation ceremonies, and personal events such as weddings and memorial services. With a seating capacity of 114 people, the Chapel can accommodate up to 140 people with additional folding chairs.
