Silver Lake Park
Silver Lake Park in Athol, Town of, MA is a popular destination for families, day care providers, and after school programs, boasting the town's largest public playground spread across two acres of fenced area. The playground holds historical significance, as it was once the site of the Lake Park School, a six-room schoolhouse built in 1894. After the school was deemed unsafe in 1962 and demolished in 1966, the empty lot served as a space for neighborhood kids to play until 1987 when the community rallied together to create a magnificent wooden play structure resembling a castle and fortress. However, due to concerns of arsenic contamination in the soil, the playground was closed in 2005 and subsequently torn down. A new playground was then built, featuring state-of-the-art and handicapped accessible equipment, at a cost of just under $200,000.
