North Square Stories is a captivating public artwork located in Boston's historic North Square. Created by A J Art Design in collaboration with the Boston Public Works Department and BETA, Inc. landscape architects, this project beautifully weaves together the rich narratives of pre-industrial Boston, maritime stories, immigration and habitation, and cultural feasts and ceremonies. The sculptures, including a relief sculpture of an 18th-century panoramic view, a North End map, a diorama street scene, and a whimsical viewing instrument, all pay homage to the area's deep connection to the sea. Visitors are encouraged to explore the sculptures and discover the fascinating connections they have to the surrounding neighborhood and city. With its origins dating back to the 1630s, North Square is one of the oldest public squares in the United States. Over the centuries, it has served as a bustling market area and a community gathering place. The square offers a breathtaking vista of the city, thanks to its elevation and southward slope. Notable historical figures, such as Increase Mather and Cotton Mather, have ties to North Square, and their stories are beautifully depicted in the Fantastical Historical Nautical Instrument sculpture.
