Founded in 1947, the American Association of Blood Banks is an international association located in Bethesda, Md. It represents individuals and institutions involved in activities related to transfusion and cellular therapies, including transplantation medicine. Its consulting services division provides expertise in management and process improvement systems and solutions to blood, plasma and tissue collection and management facilities. It also provides transfusion services to clinical laboratories, cellular and related biological therapy facilities. Its National Blood Data Resource Center conducts surveys of blood services activities in the United States, monitors and forecasts blood supply and demand, and performs commissioned research for the federal government and other clients. Its members include community and hospital blood banks, hospital transfusion services and laboratories. Its individual members include physicians, nurses, scientists, administrators, medical technologists, blood donor recruiters and public relations practitioners.
