Alex Johnson, MD

Alex Johnson, M.D., is an orthopaedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist. He specializes in treating patients with conditions of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow. Dr. Johnson is skilled in arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat many joint conditions. Dr. Johnson is an expert in hip arthroscopy and is the Director of hip preservation at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Johnson is an assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He then obtained his M.D., graduating cum laude from Emory University, and completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins. While in residency training, Dr. Johnson also completed a National Institutes of Health research fellowship, investigating applications for head-mounted displays and augmented reality in orthopaedic surgery. Most recently, Dr. Johnson completed a sports medicine fellowship at the world renowned American Sports Medicine Institute at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. During his fellowship, Dr. Johnson served as assistant team physician for the Birmingham Barrons baseball team, the Alabama Ballet, the University of West Alabama Tigers and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. His clinical interests include ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization, elbow arthroscopy, ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John) surgery, treatment of hip labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), endoscopic hamstring repair, endoscopic gluteus medius repair and cartilage restoration. Dr. Johnson’s research interests include computer-aided surgery, head mounted displays and augmented reality for use in orthopaedic surgery.

Hamid Hassanzadeh, MD

Hamid Hassanzadeh, M.D., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in spine conditions and disorders. He treats patients with back and neck pain due to degenerative disk disease, complex and simple spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis, spinal infections, spinal tumors and spinal trauma. Dr. Hassanzadeh received his medical degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, followed by a two-year neurosurgery residency at Westküstenklinikum Heide. He went on to complete his orthopaedic internship and residency at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by a spine surgery fellowship at Rush University Medical Center and a pediatric spine surgery fellowship at Shriners Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.In addition to treating patients, Dr. Hassanzadeh is dedicated to educating the next generation of orthopaedic spine specialists. He accomplished this in his previous role as director of a spine surgery fellowship, as a mentor to several postdoctoral fellows, as an instructor of multiple national and international training courses, and as an author of numerous talks and research publications.Dr. Hassanzadeh’s research interests include improving outcomes of spinal surgeries in adult and elderly patients, motion preservation, and outcomes after minimally invasive procedures. He is an award-winning researcher, has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and 40 textbook chapters and presented in many conferences and invited talks in the U.S. and internationally. His clinical care excellence earned him a spot on the Best Doctors in America list in 2019–20.
