Knowing tradition, however, does not imply that we are bound by it. We know traditional forms, and frequently design traditional-style architecture. We also design award-winning modern houses. When designing a modern structure, the history of shapes helps us to decide when and where to tweak or even break traditional rules. We have accomplished our mission not when we have designed a building that fits perfectly within a specific style, but when the client looks at the design and thinks: yes, this is me. In order to achieve this feeling of recognition, we engage in active listening and we encourage our clients to become active members of the design team. It is their house or their garden, not ours.
