Carrie Anne-Gilbert Herzke, MD

Dr. Keller joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in March 2021 as an Assistant Professor and currently attends in the medical intensive care unit and the cardiac surgical intensive care unit. His primary clinical interest is care of patients with critical illness with a focus on advanced mechanical support of respiratory and circulatory failure. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Keller was faculty at Harvard Medical School and an attending physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital where he served as the inaugural Medical Director of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Service. Clinically, he attended on the lung transplant service and also in the medical intensive care unit and cardiac surgical intensive care unit. He received his medical degree from Stanford University and completed residency training in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital prior to completing fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the National Institutes of Health. Before pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Keller received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University in electrical engineering and his master’s in semiconductor physics at Cambridge University where he studied as a Churchill Scholar. He received his doctorate in medical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the Department of Defense and National Science Foundation graduate fellowships.Dr. Keller conducts translational research on mechanical circulatory support, organ-device interactions, and extracorporeal organ perfusion.

Dr. Mohamad Hanouneh is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include renal medicine.Dr. Hanouneh grew up in Syria and completed his medical school in Tishreen University in Latakia, Syria. He completed Internal Medicine Residency training at Cleveland Clinic, and Nephrology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins.Dr. Hanouneh currently serves as a part-time faculty in the Division of Nephrology at Johns Hopkins. He also works in the Nephrology Center of Maryland covering Good Samaritan and Upper Chesapeake Hospitals.Dr. Hanouneh has a passion in medical education. He runs the nephrology board review course and participates in Genes to Society Course of Renal Physiology, which is given to the medical students at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His area of interests are electrolytes disorders, diabetic kidney disease and nephrolithiasis.

Dr. Rothman has been on the faculty at Johns Hopkins since 1996, when he joined as assistant chief of service. He was promoted in 2012 to professor and vice chair of research for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He also serves as the Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship director and director of research for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases.Dr. Rothman’s research program focuses on the interface of emergency/episodic care and infectious disease surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment. His research includes studies on varied infectious diseases, including HIV/STDs, pneumonia, meningitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and influenza. He also conducts research on development/translation of rapid novel diagnostics for infectious disease detection. Dr. Rothman’s interdisciplinary research program includes investigators from emergency medicine, microbiology, infectious disease and public health. Dr. Rothman has been continuously funded by federal grants since 1996. He has served as principal investigator for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ Mid-Atlantic Regional Center of Excellence in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases’ diagnostics program. He was also the lead investigator on a diagnostics program for the Department of Homeland Security on disaster preparedness and response, focusing on evaluation of diagnostic methods for hospitals for emerging and biothreat events. He founded the National Emergency Department HIV Testing Consortium in 2007 with colleagues from Denver Health Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, and is active in implementation research in this arena with funding from the National Institutes of Health. Currently, he serves as co-principal investigator on a multicenter study for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, which is developing new approaches for rapid influenza surveillance diagnosis and treatment. He is also co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Rothman also holds a multipatent portfolio in molecular diagnostics.
