The Baltimore Society of Model Engineers is a group of dedicated volunteers who share a deep love for various forms of model railroading. Founded in 1932, it is the second oldest modeling society in the United States. The society focuses on constructing and operating model railroad layouts in O (1/48) scale and HO (1/87) scale, while also engaging in discussions on railroad history, model construction techniques, and current events in the railroad world.

Members of the BSME explore a wide array of topics during their discussions, ranging from local industrial railroads like the Patapsco and Back Rivers to techniques for modeling rust on freight cars. The society offers educational opportunities in carpentry, electrical work, digital electronics, mechanical engineering, and artistic techniques related to model railroading. Historical research is also a significant aspect of their activities, with some members focusing on modeling specific railroads that are no longer in operation.

With a mission to provide an educational resource to the community and STE(A)M educators, the BSME aims to showcase the diverse skills involved in model railroading. Through the construction of operational displays and realistic scenery, the society strives to offer an immersive and educational model railroading experience that inspires and delights all who engage with it.
