About Rockport MarineRockport Marine Inc was founded in 1962 by Luke Allen. Tucked at the head of the harbor on the west side of Penobscot Bay in Rockport, Maine, the shop opened its doors as a storage and repair facility for wooden boats. Upstairs from the shop was the Sail Loft Restaurant, run by Luke's wife Norma. From the restaurant, patrons could watch the comings and goings in the boatyard and the antics of the famous seal, Andre.Since that time, Rockport Marine has grown in reputation to become one of the industry's premier wooden boat yards. Specializing in new construction, restoration, and design work, RMI has built a wide variety of boats, from traditional plank-on-frame to modern wood-composite vessels. Rockport Marine offers design services, storage facilities, and has an on-site metal fabrication shop, and 55-ton boat hoist.

Today, Dark Harbor Boat Yard has evolved into a full service boat yard, located at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, in Cradle Cove on 700 Acre Island. Acre Island, as it is referred to, sits off of Islesboro, next to Warren Island ( which has its own state park ). Although there is no automobile access to Acre Island, Islesboro can be reached by the Maine State Ferry, the Margaret Chase Smith, that provides multiple departures from Lincolnville daily. Arrangements can be made to meet you at the Islesboro Ferry Dock and then a quick boat ride delivers you to Acre Island. For those arriving by water, Cradle Cove can be a safe anchorage within Gilkey Harbor, as you explore the area. Besides offering fuel, moorings, and any repair needed ; we also have showers, laundry, ice and a fully stocked marine store. Along with the above-mentioned Dark Harbor 20's, we service between 200-250 boats ranging from working lobster boats to ocean cruisers. We have an extensive dry-stack storage area for small powerboats, sailboats and dinghies ; while the larger yachts are hauled on a railway and stored under cover.
