Belfast Co-op, established in 1976 and based in Belfast, Maine, is built on more than 6,000-square-feet of retail space, with storage facility, a receiving and loading area, and a parking lot in front. The co-operative also offers a cafe that seats up to 40 people. Its deli and meat department provides organic and natural free-range meat from local sources. The store contains more than 40-linear-feet of freezer space for organic frozen food. It also carries an extensive list of local, national and international beers, and wines. Belfast Co-op s health and beauty aids department stocks a wide selection of natural cosmetics, vitamins and homeopathic remedies. The cooperative also provides a forum for education and action concerning nutrition, the food distribution system, community organizing, and related issues.
