True Vine Baptist Church, founded on September 27, 1865, began in the slave quarters of the Zeringue Plantation under the leadership of Reverend Thomas Peterson. It is recognized as the second oldest black church on the West Bank and continues to serve its congregation today.
Relocating in 1898 to the developed area of Salaville, the church has faced challenges, including two major fires in 1926 and 1961, but has been rebuilt and remains a significant part of the community. Located at 249 Sala Avenue, True Vine Baptist Church has a rich history intertwined with the local landscape and the African American experience in Westwego.
