The Pontchartrain Levee District was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 1895. The district offers flood protection services for residences on the east bank of the Mississippi River for a six Parish area, including East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles in Louisiana. It conducts studies to develop alternatives for ecosystem restoration and flood damage reduction. The Pontchartrain Levee District protects more than 5 lakh residents in the six Parish area, as well as incorporates evacuation routes for over 1 million people.
