Market Basket was established in 1962 by Johnnie Alford, Ed Hughes, Howard Hatfield, Roy Theriot and Bruce Thompson. Each was an independent grocer, owning one store apiece. The five grocers joined together to form a company that presently operates more than 30 stores. With locations in Texas and Louisiana, the company employs more than 2,200 associates and operates stores under several brands, including Market Basket, Lucky Seven, Mercado de Familia Supermarket and Market Basket Express. Market Basket features bakery, deli, dairy, frozen food, meat and produce departments. It offers e-cards, newsletters, gift cards, discount coupons and online recipes.
