History The Wendover Bed & Breakfast and Retreat Center was established in 2001, but its history dates back to 1925 when it became the birthplace of midwifery and family nursing in America. Mary Breckinridge built her lovely log home now known as “The Big House” in 1925, the same year she founded the Frontier Nursing Service to provide professional healthcare in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. The Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery (now Frontier Nursing University) was founded in 1939 to educate and train nurse-midwives. Today, The Big House is one of only 32 National Historic Landmarks in Kentucky. Guests travel from far and wide to be immersed in this inspiring historical experience.
