The Hockersmith House
218 S Scott St
Madisonville, KY 42431
The Hockersmith House, located in Madisonville, Kentucky, is a historical site associated with Captain L.D. Hockersmith, a member of John Hunt Morgan's Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. Captured during Morgan's Ohio raid in July 1863, Hockersmith was held in prison but famously escaped with five other officers through a tunnel he helped dig.
Erected in 1971 by the Kentucky Historical Society, the marker commemorates Hockersmith's daring escape, which is considered one of the most audacious of its time. The house is situated on South Scott Street, just south of East Broadway Street, and is surrounded by several other historical markers within walking distance.
