Michael J. Ferguson, M.D., M.S., is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist and chief of Norton Children’s Cancer Institute, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine. He also serves as division chief of the UofL School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics Division of Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. Dr. Ferguson earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. He completed his pediatric residency, pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship, and a National Institutes of Health T32-funded clinical pharmacology fellowship at Indiana University Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis. Dr. Ferguson also holds master’s degrees in cellular and integrative physiology, and clinical investigation from Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Ferguson is board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and has specialized expertise in precision cancer genomics. He is committed to advancing pediatric cancer care through his leadership in clinical research, trials and grant-funded initiatives. He has shared his expertise in multiple medical publications and serves on various national advisory boards and committees, including the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Bone Cancer Panel. He also holds key roles within the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and the Children’s Oncology Group, focusing his research on using clinical genomics to identify novel therapeutic combinations for recalcitrant pediatric sarcomas. Dr. Ferguson said he felt called to medicine, and after doing a medical exploring program in high school, he knew then that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. In his current role, he embraces the role of being a guide for families and helping them navigate through difficult diagnoses and treatments. As a family-first individual, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He shares a love of distance running with his daughter, while settling in for science fiction movies and shows with his son. He and his wife enjoy cooking, traveling and long walks with their dogs.
