Samrath J Bhimani, MD
Samuel D. Carter, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon with Norton Orthopedic Institute. He specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy. Dr. Carter earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia, Richmond. Dr. Carter is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds subspecialty certification in sports medicine. In addition to sports medicine, Dr. Carter has special interests in femoroacetabular impingement, acetabular labral tears, knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus tears, cartilage restoration, partial knee replacement, patellar realignment, and arthroscopy of the hip, knee and shoulder. Dr. Carter believes in a patient-centered approach to orthopedic care. He maintains relationships with other physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers so that he can provide a team approach to care. Justin M Givens, MD
Justin Givens, M.D., is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions in adults and children. Dr. Givens performs an array of shoulder and elbow procedures including muscle sparing shoulder replacement, complex shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff surgery, labral procedures, elbow replacement, and other revision, reconstruction and sports procedures. He earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville in 2017 while also completing his residency training there in 2022. Dr. Givens completed his shoulder and elbow fellowship in Tampa, FL at the Florida Orthopedic Institute with world renowned surgeons Dr. Mark Frankle and Dr. Mark Mighell. He then completed extended training in treatment of knee/sports training including ACL, meniscus, cartilage and other sports procedures of the knee. Dr. Givens’ mission is to provided top of the line care with a focus on the patient’s goals and returning to everyday life as soon as possible. He will be one of the only providers in the state, and region, performing muscle sparing shoulder replacement( SWAT-subscapularis window anatomic total) to ensure patients are out of their slings in less than 2 weeks for the majority of shoulder replacement patients. He is actively involved in research focusing on complex revision techniques, cutting edge technological advances and expediting recovery in shoulder and elbow surgery. In his free time Dr. Givens enjoys spending time with his family, coaching his children’s youth sports teams, being active in his church, traveling and performing Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit workouts.

Nathan L McKinney, DO
Nathan L. McKinney, D.O., CAQSM is an orthopedic sports medicine physician with Norton Orthopedic Institute. He specializes in nonsurgical orthopedic care for adolescents and adults. Dr. McKinney earned his medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University–DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and a fellowship in sports medicine at TriHealth/Bethesda Family Practice Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. McKinney is certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine, and also certified as a clinical exercise physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He has special interests in ultrasound-guided injections and diagnosis, orthobiologics, sports nutrition and biomechanics. His goals of care are to efficiently provide an accurate diagnosis, empower patients with the knowledge of potential treatment options, and return patients to their desired level of activity in a safe and timely manner. Dr. McKinney previously served as team physician for Xavier University, Mt. St. Joseph University and Summit Country Day High School, all in Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently, he serves as medical co-director of jockey care at Churchill Downs, as well as team physician for Bellarmine University in Louisville and Hanover College in Indiana. A former track and field athlete at Bellarmine University, he now continues his passion for both competitive and recreational athletics in a variety of sports. He most enjoys his time spent outside with his family and friends.
