Louisville Mega Cavern

Louisville Mega Caverns isn't quite like any cave you've ever visited. First of all, it's huge, with over 17 miles of underground man-made trails. Secondly, it's more than just a walking tour of history or geology. This massive mega cavern is one of only two places in the U.S. where you can tour the cavern by tram, and the fun just starts there. Visitors can also choose to take the almost three-hour zip line adventure, try the only underground aerial ropes challenge course in the world or try their hand on one of 45 trails and tracks on the underground bike park. If all that doesn't appeal to the thrill seeker, this cavern transforms itself at holiday season into an underground lighted display, called Lights Under Louisville, with almost 900 lit-up features and creatures.

Parking is free at the Mega Caverns and travel on your own is probably the best way to get there. The closest TARC stop is Route 43 to Poplar Level and some routes stop off at the Louisville Zoo. The Zoo is within walking distance, but it's a one mile walk. If you planning on driving through at the holiday season, your own vehicle is a must. If you're planning on the bike tour, there is limited bike rental so you might need to bring your own gear.

Best and worst time to go to Louisville Mega Caverns
It's always best to call ahead and reserve your spot on one of the guided tours as many of them get sold out. Summer is always busy since the kids are out for the summer. Also, weekdays and evenings are better than the busier Saturday and Sundays. If you're planning on the holiday tour, make sure to go as early in the season as you can. The closer it gets to Christmas day, the longer the line is and you could be waiting for hours to take the tour.

Ticket prices vary depending on which tour or attraction you want to take, ranging from about $15 for the tram ticket and up to $90 for a weekend trip on the zip lines. Discounts are offered to students, children, seniors and visitors can also buy combo tickets for several different tours. The bike park offers day ticket prices for those who want to stay and play all day, or even return for multiple days.

Regardless of which thrill you're into, don't skip the tram tour. It's the cheapest and shortest tour and the information given about the history of this wonder and the uses of the cave are really amazing, no matter if you're into caves or not. Do be aware that the zip line and ropes courses are very physically strenuous, so consider your physical fitness before you sign on.

Other places to visit near Louisville Mega Caverns
Louisville Zoo is just one mile away so make sure make the time for it. Audubon Park is also within close driving distance and makes a nice spot for a picnic or some nature walks. There's also locally-owned several restaurants in the area.

Insiders tip for visitors to Louisville Mega Caverns
The best tip is to plan for a full day of fun. Take advantage of the combo ticket and spend the day underground. It's the perfect way to beat the summer heat and is open all year, so you can also go on those frigid winter days when all the other attractions are closed and they don't close because of rain or bad weather "topside." The temperature is a bit cool at 59 degrees year round, so dress for the underground. Also, many of the tours don't allow flip flops or open-toes shoes, so be sure to dress accordingly.
