The Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial, constructed in 1988, is one of the largest granite memorials in the nation, honoring the 1,109 Kentucky veterans who served during the Vietnam War. Each veteran's name is precisely engraved on blue-gray granite, allowing the shadow of the sundial pointer to touch their name on the anniversary of their death, providing a personal tribute to their sacrifice.
In addition to honoring fallen soldiers, the memorial also features the names of Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action, engraved on a stone located behind the gnomon, where the shadow will never fall. The memorial welcomes visitors, including groups and schools, to learn about the history and significance of Kentucky's contributions during the Vietnam War.
