Dr. Marshall received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 1983 and completed a pediatric residency there in 1986. He then went to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for fellowship training in infectious diseases. In 1989, he joined the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics, where he is now Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Marshall serves as an attending physician at Norton Children’s Hospital and sees patients in the infectious diseases clinic. He has been recognized as an astute clinician/educator, a productive investigator, and an effective administrator, receiving, among other awards, the Outstanding Clinical Professor and Educator of the Year Awards from the Department of Pediatrics, the Distinguished Educator Award from the School of Medicine, and the Educational Achievement Award from the Kentucky Medical Association. In 2018, Dr. Marshall received the Plotkin Lecture in Vaccinology Award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society for “contributions to the field of vaccinology or areas of related science that have impacted the lives of children and the specific area of pediatric infectious diseases.” Under Dr. Marshall’s leadership, the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases has repeatedly been recognized for excellence in teaching and patient care. Dr. Marshall is a member of numerous academic societies and has served in several national leadership positions. He is credited with over 190 publications and is best known for his work in vaccine development, advocacy, and education. Dr. Marshall is the author of The Vaccine Handbook: A Practical Guide for Clinicians (also known as The Purple Book), now in its 9th edition and available through a free app for iOS devices.

Esther E Knapp, MD
Dr. Esther Knapp is a board certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist with specialized training in pediatric bone marrow transplantation. She joined the University of Louisville Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in 2017. Her clinical responsibilities include attending on the inpatient pediatric hematology/oncology service, as well as the outpatient clinic and infusion area. She is also responsible for medical education of medical students, residents, and fellows. She also teaches a class on bioethics for medical students. She works at the University of Louisville Physicians as well as Norton Children’s Hospital. Her research background includes basic science research on the role of oxidative stress in diffuse large B cell lymphoma, as well as clinical research on fetal hemoglobin in sickle cell disease. She also has conducted research on ethical considerations in genetic testing in pediatric oncology, including next generation sequencing techniques. She is currently conducting a study looking at patient and family perspectives on genetic testing in pediatric oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Hematology.
