Captain Mary B. Greene Statue
Captain Mary B. Greene was a legendary lady riverboat captain on the Ohio River. Born the daughter of a country storekeeper, she left the land to make her life and raise her family on the rivers of America. Captain Mary became one of the few women to become a licensed boat master and river pilot, steering through a cyclone, surviving an explosion of nitroglycerin, and even giving birth to a son while her boat was locked in an ice gorge. After the death of her husband, she ran the 28 paddlewheelers of the Greeneline Steamers Company, including the famous Delta Queen.
This statue of Captain Mary B. Greene was erected in 1988 in George Rogers Clark Park in Covington, Kentucky. It was made possible by the Central Trust of Kenton County, Kenton National Bank, Huntington Bank of Kenton County, and sculptor Michael Price, as an official project of the Greater Cincinnati Bicentennial Commission. Captain Mary's remarkable life and achievements as a pioneering female riverboat captain are commemorated in this statue, honoring her place in the history of the American South and the waterways of the Ohio River.
