According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.3 km²), of which, 1.3 square miles (3.3 km²) of it is land and 0.78% is water. The town was founded and named in 1817 by Dr. John Bemiss. The name is said to be taken from the maiden name of his wife Miss Bloomer and his son-in-law Mr. Merifield.
