No one in our community should go hungry, and your metro area Price Choppers are committed to keeping food on the tables of needy folks through our "CHOP Hunger" program. We've been a long-time supporter of the area Harvesters Food Bank, but we decided to formalize our commitment in June 2009 through our "CHOP Hunger" program. We set a goal to gather 1 million meals for Harvesters between June 2009 and June 2010. Thanks to our customers' participation in some of the food and fund initiatives listed below, we actually provided 1.3 million meals. Now, we've set an even bigger goal, and hope to provide 1.5 million meals by June 2011. All collected foods are distributed by Harvesters through its network of 620 non-profit agencies in the metro, providing food assistance to as many as 66, 000 different people each week. Not the environmental kind. The St. Patrick's Day kind. Each year, your metro area Price Choppers help gather food for Harvesters in the "Go for the Green" food drive sponsored by the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. Established in 1986, the food drive now involves nearly 50 local schools that gather food for the event, and your local Price Choppers provide them with thousands of grocery bags to hold their donations. In addition, each of our 49 locally-owned Price Choppers gathers food in Harvesters barrels for the drive. "Go for the Green" has brought in more than 250, 000 pounds of food" that's about 200, 000 meals" in the past nine years alone. They say everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, and we think it's also a good time to remember those in need.
