The Monroe County Freedom Rock, located in Albia, Iowa, is a unique tribute to our nation's veterans. Established in 1999 by artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, this large boulder weighing over 60 tons is repainted annually to honor the service of veterans. Inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan, Sorensen embarked on this project to provide a distinctive recognition to veterans every Memorial Day.
Sorensen's dedication to painting The Freedom Rock is fueled by donations and the unwavering support of his family and friends. In addition to the original artwork in rural Iowa, Sorensen has initiated the 50 State Freedom Rock Tour, taking his message of gratitude across the country. Each county in Iowa now boasts its own Freedom Rock, with Sorensen's vision extending to creating similar monuments in all 50 states.
