Hy-Vee, headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, operates more than 220 retail grocery and drug stores in seven Midwestern states, including its Hy-Vee Food Stores location in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Founded in 1930, the company has also acquired or developed several ancillary companies, including a bank, a floral company, a construction company and an advertising agency. The current company name is a contraction of its founders' names, Hyde and Vredenburg. Its supermarkets are located in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota. The company also operates drugstores in Iowa and Nebraska. Its main distribution complex is located in Chariton, Iowa, and a second distribution facility is located in Cherokee, Iowa.
