The Freedom Rock, established in 1999 and located in rural Iowa, is a large boulder that is repainted annually to honor the nation's veterans. Artist Ray Bubba Sorensen II, inspired by the film "Saving Private Ryan," paints the rock each year with the support of family, friends, and community donations.
In addition to the original Freedom Rock, Sorensen has created a Freedom Rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties, promoting a message of gratitude for veterans across the state. He has also initiated the 50 State Freedom Rock Tour, expanding his mission to recognize veterans nationwide through unique murals in various communities.
