Fort Severson, located in Carpenter, IA, is a historic two-story barn that has been affectionately referred to as "Fort Severson" by local residents. Built in the mid-1850s, this solidly constructed structure is made of local limestone and timber from the surrounding woodlands. Although it never served as a fort for protection, it stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of early pioneers and has been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nels Severson, the builder of Fort Severson, was a Norwegian immigrant who arrived in America in 1852. He settled in Carpenter and constructed the barn in 1867 with the help of his neighbors. The barn's walls are 18 inches thick and made of irregularly cut limestone, held together by lime mortar. While there are rumors of the barn being used for Indian protection and as a stagecoach stop, it was primarily used for farming and as a shelter for wagon teams. Today, Fort Severson stands as a cherished piece of local history, showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of early settlers in the area.
