The Freedom Rock, established in 1999 by artist Ray Bubba Sorensen II, is a massive boulder located in rural Iowa, annually repainted to honor veterans with unique murals. Inspired by the film Saving Private Ryan, Sorensen undertakes this project with support from family, friends, and community donations, further expanding the initiative to create Freedom Rocks in all 99 counties of Iowa.
Through the Freedom Rock Tour, Sorensen aims to spread the message of gratitude toward veterans across the nation by bringing unique, localized Freedom Rocks to communities beyond Iowa. With a commitment to recognizing military service, Sorensen continues to paint both outdoor murals in warmer climates during winter and indoor murals throughout the rest of the year.
