Underwriters Surety, headquartered in Indianapolis, was founded in 1986 by John T. Whitlock and William B. Carmichael. It is the national bail manager for Indiana Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company, a mutual company licensed to write throughout the United States. Underwriters Surety specializes in commercial bail and acquired American Surety Company in 1993. It is affiliated with several national, state and local agent organizations, in addition to working with groups, such as the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Indiana Insurance Institute. The company is one of the industry leaders in applying technological innovation to the management of client information through its relationship with BARS Network, an Internet-based agency management program.
