About Dr. Yuen From an early age, Dr. Sonia Yuen was impacted by her father’s passion for medicine. “It was contagious,” she says. “I tried to keep an open mind about future careers during college, but medicine was the perfect career to combine my love for helping people, learning science, performing art through surgery and teaching.” Sonia actually comes from a long line of physicians, including her grandfather, father, siblings and many cousins. As an otolaryngologist, or ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, Dr. Yuen treats people surgically and medically with a broad range of conditions that can affect their ears, nose, mouth, throat or neck. She loves the intricate connections of the head and neck region and explains, “All these structures contribute to how we communicate with the world – through facial expression, sight, hearing, speech, smell, taste, etc. – and it is my privilege to help others with issues in these areas.” She chose to practice at Beacon because of the friendly team of people and the excellent care they provide. “Medicine is such a team sport,” she explains, “and to be able to work with such an all-star team is a dream come true.” When asked about her philosophy for practicing medicine, Dr. Yuen believes in open, honest communication and empowering her patients with information that helps them make decisions together. She also recalls the words of her mentor and asks herself: If he or she were your family member, what would you do? “I’ve found myself often saying that it’s my privilege to care for others – young and old,” she says. “People are entrusting me to use my medical knowledge and skills to help better their lives, and I do not take that lightly. I believe that if I treat my patients with the same care and attention as I would for my family members, then I will have tried my best.” In Her Own Words Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My husband has been on this adventure with me through college, medical school, research years, residency, and parenthood. I’m grateful for all the sacrifices he’s made for my career and all the advice he’s given me. Our journey together has made me a more well-rounded person, and I credit all my accomplishments partly to him. To say I married up is a very large understatement. What is your favorite food? Movie? What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My husband always laughs at me because it’s hard for me to say I have favorites – I love a lot of things! One of my favorite foods is a Chinese eggplant dish that I always look for when I’m at a Chinese restaurant. I enjoy watching Netflix documentaries while I exercise, and we like watching Marvel and Disney movies. My best subjects in school were science and art, and my worst was social studies. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? It would be amazing to meet and talk with Barack Obama. He’s a great speaker and his passion for the world is evident. Making decisions that impact the world at such a level is such a weighty burden, and it would be incredible to hear how he dealt with that. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? My faith and family help center me, and I am very interested in sustainability and caring for the environment. I hope to keep expanding my vegetable garden year by year and grow some fruit trees!

About Adam Snoap, M.D. A career in medicine became the career path for Adam Snoap, M.D., early on in college. “Science had always been my favorite subject, and I was between physical therapy and medical school,” he says. “The personalities in otolaryngology are what mainly drew me to the specialty. The physicians are happy, patient and kind.” While specializing in Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) was not his initial plan, one lecture in medical school made him look into it. He deals with medical and surgical problems from the head and neck, ranging from placing children’s ear tubes to removing neck masses. Dr. Snoap earned his MD at IU School of Medicine, completed an Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery residency at the University of Florida, and fellowship trained in Pediatric Otolaryngology from the Medical University of South Carolina. His philosophy in practicing medicine is to empower patients. He wants them to understand why the problem is occurring and then have a discussion with them to tailor a treatment plan to best suit their life. With children, he understands that going to the doctor can be scary, so he works to engage with them, asking them about themselves to make them as comfortable as possible. Patients have taught Dr. Snoap about resilience. “I have seen so many people struggle through and overcome very difficult situations, and still come out the other side with a positive attitude.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My father was my greatest role model growing up. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? A tennis instructor for children. I remember loving working with children and how so many of them did not care about keeping the ball in the court. They were more concerned with hitting it as far over the fence as possible! What is your favorite food? Movie? Favorite food: Pad Thai Favorite movies: The Mission Impossible series, The Prestige, and Warrior come to mind What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? Best classes were science or Spanish. Worst subject was probably writing. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Probably Neil Armstrong. It would be fascinating to hear first-hand from someone what it was like to walk on the moon and who has experienced space. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love spending time with my wife, dog, and cat. We enjoy exploring new towns and going for walks/hikes. What are your hobbies, interests? I enjoy any sport with a racquet, I play tennis regularly and hope to learn pickleball at some point! Also, I enjoy film editing, and recently have worked on some surgical instruction videos for trainees. What is something most people don’t know about you? Donald Mohs, MD - Beacon Medical Group ENT and Audiology South Bend

Dr. Donald C. Mohs has always wanted to be a doctor. “I suspect that my mother whispered that to me when I was in my crib as a baby, planting the suggestion,” he says. Because the complexity of head and neck anatomy interests Dr. Mohs, he chose otolaryngology as his specialty. With more than three decades of experience, Dr. Mohs is an expert in diagnosing, treating and operating on head and neck conditions. “ENT is a good mix of office-based care, as well as surgery. I can see all ages – infants to elderly.” Dr. Mohs began his medical career in 1988 when he earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California. From there, he completed the Basic Surgery Internship at Oakland Naval Hospital. Dr. Mohs then served as a naval flight surgeon in the Third Marine Air Wing in the Marine Corps Air Station. Next, he completed his Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. From these experiences, Dr. Mohs has learned the importance of thoroughness. “Even when a problem is straightforward, it’s often more complicated than at first thought,” he says. “I take whatever time is necessary to treat patients, including educating them regarding their problems and treatments.” In his own words Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? Probably my sixth-grade teacher. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a busboy at the Fremont Hotel in downtown Las Vegas. I remember it was very hard work. What is something most people don’t know about you? I grew up in Las Vegas. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone, alive or deceased, who would it be and why? A toss-up between Benjamin Franklin, Teddy Roosevelt or Ernest Hemingway. All led exciting, varied lives. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? David Isaacson, MD - Beacon Medical Group ENT and Audiology South Bend

Dr. David Isaacson is the only person in his family to enter the medical field. In fact, inspired by his father, he initially majored in Electrical Engineering. "I was also passionate about the craft of model making," he explains. "My father and I would spend hours creating replicas of ships and airplanes." During his freshman year at Virginia Tech, however, all that changed. He had the opportunity to shadow a local physician on a few overnight shifts in the emergency room. "I realized that the human body presented some of the most complex problems that could be solved through physical intervention. This is what drew me to the craft of surgery and a career in medicine." In particular, it was the challenges and diversity presented by the face and neck that drew him to specialize in otolaryngology. "In addition to being the primary means of how we are perceived by others," he says, "the face is the means through which we see, hear, smell and breathe. Even a smile can be lost because of trauma, cancer, or a congenital defect in the face." As an otolaryngologist, he is often called upon to restore form and function to this critical and complex area of the body. From the newborn to the elderly, Dr. Isaacson believes in treating each patient with the same care and concern as he would his own family member. "When they are in my care, patients have my full attention and commitment to their health and well-being. They motivate me to continuously improve and to deliver the best care possible." In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My residency director, Dr. Scott Stringer. Dr. Stringer emphasized the importance of an in-depth knowledge of the human anatomy and how this is a prerequisite for optimal patient care. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a violin instructor and played as a professional violinist through college. I enjoyed meeting other musicians and having the opportunity to partake in performances like operas and ballets. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I am passionate about being the best father I can be to my three children. Teaching medical students at IU School of Medicine has been another passion of mine since moving to the South Bend area 21 years ago. In my spare time I enjoy traveling, cycling and cooking with my kids. What is something most people don’t know about you? While I was on faculty at the University of Florida, I served as a physician to space shuttle astronauts. Also, I provide pro bono care for many of the animals at the Potawatomi Zoo. My most famous patient at the zoo is a chimpanzee called Babyface.
