Dr. Scott Hurley didn’t know where his passion for the sciences would take him until he spent a summer during college interning at a camp for children with diabetes. While teaching campers coping mechanisms to make them feel like their condition was a way of life, instead of a barrier, he realized he wanted to be a doctor. “Translating the scientific knowledge into confidence for my patients brings me so much joy, said Dr. Hurley, of Columbia City, Indiana, where his father works as an emergency room physician. “I educate patients about their medical conditions so they have a well-informed and evidence-based platform from which to make decisions about their heart health.” Since graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Hurley has been caring for a variety of patients, from those who suffer from acute critical illnesses to those who require preventative medicine, and he customizes care for every patient. “So much of cardiology hinges on accurate interpretation of imaging modalities, that I focus on individualizing care based on my personalized review of patient images,” he said. Because there are not always straight-forward answers to all medical situations, Dr. Hurley understands the importance for physicians to listen and understand patients. He chose to work at Beacon because of its priority on patient-centered care. “The cardiology group emphasizes the importance of providing patient-centered care based on both evidence and compassion, which are important to me,” he said. “My father once made a point of telling me that it is a privilege to care for patients and their families,” he said. “That piece of wisdom always stays with me.” In his own words What was your first job growing up? My first job was teaching tennis at a country club where I learned the value of good customer service. The responsibilities of every individual, no matter how minute they may seem, play a giant role in customer satisfaction. What is your favorite food? Favorite movie? Sushi is my favorite food. My favorite movie is Forest Gump. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone alive or deceased, who would it be? I would sit down with Winston Churchill. I would love to hear his recollections of all the historical moments in his life. His use of language and rhythm was fascinating. In addition to medicine, what are you most passionate about? I am passionate about my family and friends, of course, especially my daughter, wife and two dogs. What is something most people don’t know about you? I enjoy cooking. My particular interest is in cooking meals with a French style of preparation and French flavors. I am not a natural cook by any means, however, and must follow directions to a T.
