About Sara Meet Sara Davis. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be in the medical field. “The intricacies of the human body fascinate me,” she says. “My aunt is a nurse and I deeply admire her. She inspired me, and there hasn’t been a day since that I have regretted my choice.” As a nurse practitioner, Sara cares for patients across the lifespan—from newborns to older adults—with the ability to assess, diagnose and prescribe medications and treatment plans. She strongly believes in providing that continuity of care throughout patients’ lives, from well visits to acute visits to chronic conditions. “My overall goal is to educate my patients to help them prevent illness and live happy, healthy, awesome lives.” For Sara, every patient counts. “Every patient has his or her own story,” she explains. “It’s so important to listen, to understand, to teach, and to learn something new in order to provide the highest quality and most compassionate care possible.” That philosophy is why she has remained with Beacon for over twelve years now. “What initially drew me to Beacon was the wide range of patients we care for. The team and the environment we work in is like no other.” What does Sara hope you’ll learn from her? “I care deeply for my patients, and chances are really good I will be thinking about them after their visit, wondering if their condition is improving, or how they are feeling overall. I’m always looking to the future and what else I can do to help them live their best lives.” In her own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? All of my family members have been influential in my life in some way. My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a caring nature, and my husband pushes me to be my best self. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? Many of you that grew up in northern Indiana may be familiar with this – detasseling corn. It was a hard, hot and dirty job that taught me at a young age what it meant to work hard. What is your favorite food? Movie? I love to eat at local breweries. My favorite movie is Forrest Gump. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I am most passionate about my family. I have been married for 18 years, and we have a four-year-old daughter named Addison. I love spending time with them going to sporting events, playing games, watching movies and just hanging out at home. I also love spending time with my extended family, including my parents, my two sisters and brother and all of their spouses and kids, and all of my in-laws. What are your hobbies, interests? My husband and I are huge Chicago sports fans… Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks, and we love to attend these sporting events! For those of you diehard Cubs fans out there, you will appreciate that our daughter is named Addison and our dog, a yellow lab, is named Maddux. What is something most people don’t know about you? I married my high-school sweetheart. We have been together since I was 14!

About Dr. Wani Dr. Adil S. Wani’s father, uncle and late grandfather were all physicians, but it wasn’t until high school that Dr. Wani decided on a career in medicine. “It was fascinating to me how the human body maintains homeostasis and small changes in this balance can lead to an illness. Preventing these small changes and improving an individual’s well-being would further lead to uplifting society. This has been my ultimate goal.” While there were many reasons to join the team, Dr. Wani chose Beacon because he shares our mission and values. “Beacon and I share the same goal: To enhance the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of communities.” As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Wani can deliver on that. “I treat individuals suffering from heart disorders. I consider the heart to be the center of the body. Any disturbance in the heart can cause a significant impact on one’s health. Prevention and treatment of a disease in such a vital organ and its impact on well-being led me to choose this specialty.” Dr. Wani received his medical degree from the Government Medical College in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. He completed his residency at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship and was the Chief Fellow at Advocate Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though interventional cardiology is his specialty, Dr. Wani has another treatment strategy he uses with all patients. “Patients have taught me the power of listening. Listening to someone with undivided attention is one of the most profound healings one can provide another.” And because he listens to his patients, Dr. Wani can keep the focus of his work where it matters: his patients. “My philosophy is to keep my treatment plan patient-centered, simple and thorough.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My late grandfather. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I have volunteered in my community growing up, and I remember it being satisfying. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My wife, she is alive, and I love our dinner time because she knows everything! In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I love traveling to new places. I enjoy hiking, sight-seeing, long endless drives, star gazing on a clear dark night and trying out different cuisines. I also enjoy working out. What is something most people don’t know about you? I am not a big fan of public speaking!

About Katie Lemmers When Amanda “Katie” Lemmers, FNP, started on her healthcare journey, she was interested in neurology and then pediatric physical therapy. As she learned more about the many aspects of medical care, she became interested in becoming a nurse practitioner and found her specialty while helping a patient who suffered from heart disease. “The patient was in ICU multiple times with cardiac interventions, and eventually had open heart surgery,” she recalls. That person ended up suffering from a cardiac arrest. She and her colleagues helped get the heart pumping again and the patient was able to walk out of the hospital five days later. “It was then I knew in my heart that if I could help just one more person with heart disease, I would,” she says.” She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University-South Bend and her Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner Degree at Goshen College (Indiana). She has experience as a school nurse, intensive care nurse and critical care nurse. Katie believes in treating the person and that each individual is unique. “There is also something to treating the mind, body and soul,” she says, adding, “I believe that we are not only treating the patient but their family as well.” She hopes her patients learn from her that even in times of difficulty, even a small change can make a difference. In her own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My father. He taught me that all obstacles are really opportunities and to never give up. About Jacob Keultjes The field of healthcare is a part of life for Jacob Keultjes, NP. His mother and wife are Nurse Practitioners and he has many aunts and cousins who are nurses. But it was his mother’s example that led him to a career in the medical field. “My mother decided to advance herself and went to nursing school when I was 8 years old. I saw how that kindled a passion in her,” he says. Her experiences had an impact on Jacob. “Those stories opened my eyes to the idea that I could choose a career that could make an immediate difference on someone’s life.” Jacob earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from IU South Bend and his Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner, from Goshen College. He worked with the Memorial Trauma Team for many years, first at bedside and then as a performance improvement coordinator. “The opportunity to take those experiences with me to a growing program and apply them as an NP was exciting,” he says. “Also, variety is the ‘spice of life’ for me. Not only do I get to work with trauma patients, but I also am able to work with the surgical patients.” Jacob has worked in trauma services and ICU/CVICU and has certifications and special training in critical care and trauma. These experiences have shaped his philosophy as a provider. “…to the best of our ability, we need to include patients in all decision making, because they help us understand the nuances that may make all the difference in their health,” he says. As he continues to be a resource for his patients as they navigate the healthcare system, he is glad to be doing this work at Beacon. “I have been with Beacon since 2009 and have seen many changes. What has stayed the same is that the people at the bedside truly care about the patients.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? In my career, easily my mom was the most influential. She has been an amazing example for me. Both of my grandmother’s also set great example on what it means to give selflessly to others. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked as a mechanic from the age of 16 until I started working in the hospital as a PCA. I remember gaining an appreciation for how much faster practice can make someone at doing a task. Things that took me an hour would take the experienced guys 20 minutes to do. What is your favorite food? Easy – ice cream. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a wicked sweet tooth. What was your worst subject in school growing up? I hated reading until the 5th grade and that made English extremely painful. That all changed when I got in to Harry Potter. Something about those books caught my imagination and helped me develop my reading skill to the point where now I love to read. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to be able to ask my grandmothers if they felt I was living up to their expectations. In addition to that, I would just love to hear more of their stories. What are your hobbies, interests? I love reading, specifically fantasy and science fiction. I like to be self-sufficient in the sense that I do most of the renovation or repair work at my house. I also enjoy building things out of wood. Last year I built a new playground for my children. Do you have pets? We have one dog, although my youngest daughter is trying very hard to get a cat.
