About Madison Parker Until Madison Parker went on a missions trip to Nicaragua her senior year of high school, she hadn’t decided on a career. Madison didn’t work on building houses during the trip, but instead spent the week caring for a bedridden mother who couldn’t afford health care. “When I returned home, I knew I wanted to be a nurse to serve others,” she says. Madison’s mother, a nurse practitioner, played a big role in her decision to study medicine, too. “She has a passion for helping others and she truly tries to make a difference in people’s lives every day,” Madison says. Madison studied at the University of Kentucky for her Bachelor’s in Science in Nursing and at Indiana University South Bend for her master’s, choosing the Family Nurse Practitioner track. Early in her nursing career, she was in the Pediatric ICU. She said the children taught and encouraged her, doing as much for her as she did for them. From her smallest patients to adults, Madison always listens to what each person has to say. She believes there is no “cookie cutter” approach to health care and takes time to connect with individuals. “I hope that patients would learn that I am truly interested in who they are and what they are pursing in health care, and [that]I will do my best to work with them to help them reach their goals,” she said. Madison is following in her mom’s footsteps by working at Beacon. Having worked for large and small health care organizations, she said this feels like home. “I knew I wanted to continue my career here.” In her own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? While family, teachers, and friends, have had such an influence on me, my faith is what guides me and has had the biggest influence in my life. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked at Juday Creek golf course and loved being the bride’s assistant for weddings. I would help set up the reception and assist the bridal party. What is your favorite food? Movie? My favorite food is any and all pasta. My favorite movie is Paulie. It’s an old movie about a little girl who gets a parrot for her birthday. What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subject in school was math and science, and my worst subject was definitely English. I did not like writing papers about subjects I wasn’t very interested in. I found myself procrastinating and writing at the very last minute. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? The first answer that pops in my head is my papaw. He died when I was only 5 years old. Although I remember bits and pieces of him, I have learned so much more through stories from family members. I am a huge country music fan. I would love to have dinner with Lauren Akins, Thomas Rhett’s wife. I love Lauren’s heart for ministry. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I love to use my Cricut to make all sorts of things. I also enjoy painting and restoring old antique furniture.

About Devin Kinney Devin Kinney, NP, had what she says most people would consider a pretty awesome job after graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Management degree. But after working a few years, she felt she was missing something that would never be fulfilled with her business degree. “As the oldest of four kids, I have always had this need to be the helper and fixer of things,” she recalls. “That being said, it didn’t take long for me to decide that nursing, and ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner, was the right career path for me.” So, Devin earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner degrees from IU South Bend. She worked as a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital of South Bend beginning in 2015, where she worked in the childbirth unit and the special care obstetrics unit. Her decision to focus on family practice came from individual clinical experiences. “Patients needed a provider they could trust to care for them through the good and the bad. I wanted to be that person for them,” she says. As a nurse practitioner, she cares for patients from infancy to the elderly, providing everything from physical to mental care. Devin hopes her patients, who are often scared and unsure, can find security under her care. “It is my job as a nurse practitioner to earn my patients trust and for them to believe that I can provide the care they deserve.” In her own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My husband – he has supported and encouraged me from the start when I decided to go back to school. He held down the fort with two kids, while I worked and went to school – without complaint, ever. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked in retail at Gap Outlet starting at age 15. I will never forget folding the jean wall over and over! What is your favorite food? Anything Italian – lasagna, manicotti, stuffed shells. I also can always eat tacos! What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? For the most part, math seemed to click for me. I could usually work my way through a math problem. Geography and history were much harder – it was the pure memorization that made those subjects difficult! If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? This one is easy for me – my grandma. We were very close, and she was an incredibly strong woman. She passed away three weeks before I was married, and I would love to sit down and tell her all about my life since then. She lived for her family and would have loved my husband and two boys like her own. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? My family! I have two boys, along with two Labrador retrievers. My husband and kids make my world go round and were huge influences on my decision to become an NP! What are your hobbies, interests? I am a (warm) outdoor person! I love being outside when the sun is shining and could spend 10 hours a day at the beach. I love to fish and could have a line in the water all day long. I also enjoy reading and doing puzzles with my kids. I would love to start playing recreational volleyball again as that has always been an interest of mine! What is something most people don’t know about you? I have had rheumatoid arthritis since I was a junior in high school and feel that it has helped me relate to friends, family and patients with chronic conditions.

About Shelby Patterson Ever since she was a young child, Shelby Patterson dreamed of becoming a nurse practitioner. After witnessing the care her grandmother received from a NP after heart surgery, she knew this was her life’s calling. “I was always fascinated with the human body and learning what all we could do! I’ve always been a nurturer so nursing became my passion,” she said. Shelby earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from IU South Bend and her Master of Science in Nursing, (Family Nurse Practitioner Track) from Goshen College, and spent the past eight years at Beacon, getting real-life experience working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. In her new role as a NP, she looks forward to the opportunity to care for and educate children and their families on how to improve their health. “I help patients with their health care needs by using my nursing knowledge and skills, but with more power to write prescriptions and determine care plan. It is truly the best of both worlds,” she added. Shelby hopes her patients learn that she truly cares for them and their health. “My job is to provide answers, comfort, and treatment tailored to their individual needs instead of just being another number in line,” she says. Shelby believes that listening to her patients to find out their greatest concerns is a vital part of her approach to care. “Patients have taught me that you must always keep an open mind and never assume,” she said. In her own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My Nana was the strongest lady I have ever met and she taught me to follow my dreams. Her stubbornness taught me determination, which has led me to where I am today. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked at Hacienda as a hostess and I remember I always loved eating their chips. What is your favorite food? Movie? What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My favorite food is chicken tacos. As far as movies go, anything not Dinosaurs or Spider-man! I hardly get time to watch anything without my kiddos picking. Best subjects: anatomy and science. Worst Subjects: government and economics. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? Being a great mommy to my sons, Jace and Jackson, and wife to my husband, Jake. Do you have pets? I have two dogs – Baxter and Molly. What is something most people don’t know about you?
