About Dr. Buck For Dr. Gregory E. Buck, getting to know his patients is step one in providing excellent patient care. “It has always been my goal to listen to each patient,” he says. “My patients have taught me to be humble and always think of another person’s perspective.” Through his more than 28 years as a Board Certified, licensed practitioner, Dr. Buck has found that much of what needs attention can be determined by what a patient tells him, directly or indirectly. “My philosophy is to get to know the patient and treat him/her wholly and to help everyone achieve their health care goals in the best way possible.” As a family physician, Dr. Buck sees patients with a broad range of medical issues – such as diabetes, blood pressure management, infections, wounds, respiratory issues and much more. He gets to know not just individuals, but whole families, developing long-term relationships and ultimately helping patients build healthier lives. Dr. Buck studied at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Indiana State Medical Association. For more than 20 years, he has taught medical students, nurse practitioners and residents about family medicine in a clinical setting. Dr. Buck chose Beacon because of his familiarity with the organization. “My father was an admitting physician [at Memorial] for almost 40 years. I even completed my residency program [there],” he said. “When the opportunity arose for me to join the Beacon team, I felt very welcomed and I look forward to continuing my career at Beacon.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My dad has been the most influential person in my life. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked at McDonald’s in Roseland. I remember we had a power outage and had to take orders by hand. I realize now how reliant we were on technology, even then. What is your favorite food? Movie? Food: I really enjoy my wife’s peach pie! Movie: I’m a Star Wars fan! What were your best/worst subjects in school growing up? I was always good at Math, but English/Language Arts was a real challenge! If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased), who would it be and why? I would want to talk to my grandfather who passed away when I was in my mid-twenties. I think he had so much wisdom to pass along. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I just love spending time with my daughters and grandchildren! I also love to tinker in my garage and my favorite pass times are water sports, like sailing and skiing. What is something most people don’t know about you? I got in the ring with a bull in Mexico and it picked me up and took me across the arena!

Dr. Martinez received her bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Martinez, a South Bend native, completed her Residency in Family Medicine at the Family Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. During her residency she also completed a Master of Public Affairs degree with an emphasis on health services management. She is board-certified in Family Medicine and has a special interest in optomizing the management of multiple chronic medical problems including chronic pain and substance use disorders. Dr. Martinez became a physician largely due to the exposure she had to medicine at a young age. "My father is a veterinarian, and a large part of my childhood was defined by the unique experiences of working in and around his practice," she says. "Assisting on farm calls and emergency surgeries in the middle of the night, were part of my life from an early age. Choosing to combine my enjoyment of science and service by becoming a doctor seemed like a natural fit." Dr. Martinez believes that medical care should be thorough and considerate of the patient's time, resources and values. "I try to treat each patient as if he or she was my only patient, to give the person the same care and consideration that I want for my family." In her spare time, Dr. Martinez enjoys reading, gardening and spending time with her husband and children.

Sandra Brown, MD

About Sharlotte Sharlotte Brown knows there is always more to learn from others. This doesn’t just apply to medicine, but to life’s relationships, as well. She says her patients have taught her an important lesson: “Listening is more powerful than anything I can do for people sometimes.” With a strong background in science and medical research, several degrees, and work experience in hospital and family medicine settings, Sharlotte is well prepared to treat patients as a Nurse Practitioner. She manages chronic/acute illness in a primary care setting collaboratively with physicians, working with all ages, across all lifespans. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from the University of Michigan, Sharlotte worked in research. Eventually deciding she wanted to work more directly with people, she went back to school, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University South Bend. From there, she went to work at Memorial Hospital of South Bend in the childbirth unit/special care obstetrics. Still wanting to learn and do more, Sharlotte eventually returned to IU South Bend for her Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner degree. Her philosophy as a provider is simple: “I am here to support you and help you live your best/healthiest life.” Seeing herself as always a nurse first, Sharlotte says she wants patient input in creating a care plan, adding that this only works if everyone is on the same page. She says that patients should know that she is on their side and has their best interest in mind. In her own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My mother, who is always herself, is resourceful, strong, caring and funny. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a babysitter from ages 11-18. That was when I found I loved getting to know families. What is your favorite food? I love pasta, coffee and chocolate. What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subjects were science and math. My worst, and least, favorite was history. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My father. He passed before I was born. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love music and my family. What are your hobbies, interests? Do you have pets? Crochet, travel, cooking/baking, playing trivia and family. I have two cats. What is something most people don’t know about you? I am a middle child. I also love art/painting.
