About Angel Roberson Angel Roberson, FNP, said she has always been in a caregiving role. Her first job was caregiver to adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Her career in medicine officially began when she worked as an inpatient nurse at IU Health University Hospital. “There, I got to form really beautiful friendships with my teammates/staff,” she says. “I wanted to further my career into a provider role as I wanted to advocate for my patient in a way in which their concerns are listened to and enacted.” Angel is a first generation Asian American and is proud of her heritage and the sacrifices her parents made to grant her the opportunity to pursue her dreams. While she is the first person in her family to choose a medical profession, she said all of her female cousins are in health care in some form – either in pharmacy or as physician assistants. Her philosophy as a provider is to be there for the people she treats. “Holistic care means seeing them as more than their diagnosis, getting to know them as a friend and helping them achieve their health goals,” she says. “There is something satisfying and beautiful about walking alongside my patients in their health journey and supporting them in their decision of their health, whatever it may be. I am there for them.” In her own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? I can’t pick, because it’s like asking, “Who is your favorite child?” Thus, the most influential people in my life who I am eternally grateful for are my parents! What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? Being a caregiver for my lovely clients who have autism. I remember and love the moments of making my clients laugh or them making me laugh. What is your favorite food? Movie? Hardest question of my life – I have these food jags, basically where I can’t get enough of a certain food and will eat it for like months until I get tired of it. The first movie that popped into my mind is, 13 going on 30. What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? I am embarrassed to say this, but my worst subjects were history, government and math. My best subjects were English, biology and anatomy/physiology. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to have a dinner with my husband’s late Grandpa CJ, whom I never met. It would have been great to get to meet and know the man who greatly impacted my husband and my father-in-law. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? Trying new foods from different cultures, hiking (enjoying how beautiful nature is, specifically Yosemite National Park), and DIY projects for home improvement! What are your hobbies, interests? This is going to sound silly, but I love coloring with gel pens, crayons, markers, and colored pencils. I also love to go on walks with my friends, husband or our Chihuahua, Chimmy, (in no particular order). Another interest is my love for finding new ways for self-care such as meditation and reading books ranging from “Power of Now,” by Eckhart Tolle, to books written by James Patterson. What is something most people don’t know about you? I have only been to one football game in my entire existence (an IU football game in Bloomington), and it was for 30 minutes.

About Dr. Wani Dr. Adil S. Wani’s father, uncle and late grandfather were all physicians, but it wasn’t until high school that Dr. Wani decided on a career in medicine. “It was fascinating to me how the human body maintains homeostasis and small changes in this balance can lead to an illness. Preventing these small changes and improving an individual’s well-being would further lead to uplifting society. This has been my ultimate goal.” While there were many reasons to join the team, Dr. Wani chose Beacon because he shares our mission and values. “Beacon and I share the same goal: To enhance the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of communities.” As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Wani can deliver on that. “I treat individuals suffering from heart disorders. I consider the heart to be the center of the body. Any disturbance in the heart can cause a significant impact on one’s health. Prevention and treatment of a disease in such a vital organ and its impact on well-being led me to choose this specialty.” Dr. Wani received his medical degree from the Government Medical College in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. He completed his residency at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship and was the Chief Fellow at Advocate Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though interventional cardiology is his specialty, Dr. Wani has another treatment strategy he uses with all patients. “Patients have taught me the power of listening. Listening to someone with undivided attention is one of the most profound healings one can provide another.” And because he listens to his patients, Dr. Wani can keep the focus of his work where it matters: his patients. “My philosophy is to keep my treatment plan patient-centered, simple and thorough.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My late grandfather. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I have volunteered in my community growing up, and I remember it being satisfying. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My wife, she is alive, and I love our dinner time because she knows everything! In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I love traveling to new places. I enjoy hiking, sight-seeing, long endless drives, star gazing on a clear dark night and trying out different cuisines. I also enjoy working out. What is something most people don’t know about you? I am not a big fan of public speaking!

Jacob Keultjes, NP - Beacon Medical Group Surgical Services Elkhart

About Jacob Keultjes The field of healthcare is a part of life for Jacob Keultjes, NP. His mother and wife are Nurse Practitioners and he has many aunts and cousins who are nurses. But it was his mother’s example that led him to a career in the medical field. “My mother decided to advance herself and went to nursing school when I was 8 years old. I saw how that kindled a passion in her,” he says. Her experiences had an impact on Jacob. “Those stories opened my eyes to the idea that I could choose a career that could make an immediate difference on someone’s life.” Jacob earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from IU South Bend and his Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner, from Goshen College. He worked with the Memorial Trauma Team for many years, first at bedside and then as a performance improvement coordinator. “The opportunity to take those experiences with me to a growing program and apply them as an NP was exciting,” he says. “Also, variety is the ‘spice of life’ for me. Not only do I get to work with trauma patients, but I also am able to work with the surgical patients.” Jacob has worked in trauma services and ICU/CVICU and has certifications and special training in critical care and trauma. These experiences have shaped his philosophy as a provider. “…to the best of our ability, we need to include patients in all decision making, because they help us understand the nuances that may make all the difference in their health,” he says. As he continues to be a resource for his patients as they navigate the healthcare system, he is glad to be doing this work at Beacon. “I have been with Beacon since 2009 and have seen many changes. What has stayed the same is that the people at the bedside truly care about the patients.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? In my career, easily my mom was the most influential. She has been an amazing example for me. Both of my grandmother’s also set great example on what it means to give selflessly to others. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked as a mechanic from the age of 16 until I started working in the hospital as a PCA. I remember gaining an appreciation for how much faster practice can make someone at doing a task. Things that took me an hour would take the experienced guys 20 minutes to do. What is your favorite food? Easy – ice cream. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a wicked sweet tooth. What was your worst subject in school growing up? I hated reading until the 5th grade and that made English extremely painful. That all changed when I got in to Harry Potter. Something about those books caught my imagination and helped me develop my reading skill to the point where now I love to read. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to be able to ask my grandmothers if they felt I was living up to their expectations. In addition to that, I would just love to hear more of their stories. What are your hobbies, interests? I love reading, specifically fantasy and science fiction. I like to be self-sufficient in the sense that I do most of the renovation or repair work at my house. I also enjoy building things out of wood. Last year I built a new playground for my children. Do you have pets? We have one dog, although my youngest daughter is trying very hard to get a cat.

Luke Edwards, NP - Beacon Medical Group Surgical Services Elkhart

About Luke Edwards At age 11, after going on a summer mission trip with his family to Papua New Guinea, Luke Edwards, NP, decided he wanted a medical career. His mother, a Registered Nurse, worked with a missionary couple who ran the clinic there. “I saw what an impact medicine can have on the lives of people, and I believe that God has put within me a heart to serve people. I love it!” he says. He chose the specialty of surgery and trauma because of a fascination with both areas. When Luke decided to get his master’s degree, he knew he wanted to continue working in emergency and trauma in some capacity. In his role, he describes himself as a kind of middleman. “Ideally, my role helps streamline the overall patient experience by keeping everyone on the same page,” he says. Luke is a graduate of Indiana University South Bend, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and his Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner. In addition to experience in hospital and clinical settings, Luke has been a travel nurse in locations around the country. He also has volunteer experience with medical mission outreach teams in Honduras and Zambia. For his patients, Luke wants them to know his goal is to get to the root of the problem. “We’re not taking any shortcuts. We’re doing things the right way,” he says. In his own words… Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents. My mom because of health challenges over the years - including several brain surgeries - and her continued trust in the goodness of God. She’s resilient. My dad because of his consistency.
