History

Tallgrass Sudbury School is one of over 20 Sudbury schools in the United States and is modeled after the Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, MA. That school has been open since 1968.

Specialties

Tallgrass Sudbury School is the only mixed-age, democratically-run free school in the Chicago area. At Sudbury schools, students are not separated by age, there is no set curriculum, and students make all the rules and decisions of the school, including budget expenditures, and hiring and firing teachers, at a weekly democratically-run meeting.
