The Springfield Mass Transit District, also known as SMTD, is a provider of public transportation services throughout Springfield, Ill. Its fixed-route buses offer service to medical facilities, employment and retail shopping centers, tourist attractions, schools, colleges, professional buildings, the central business district and other destinations. The company s buses are equipped with lift ramps to provide accessibility for people with disabilities. The Springfield Mass Transit District also operates Access Springfield, which is a curb-to-curb service for disabled people. It maintains a fleet of more than 50 transit coaches and over 15 paratransit vans. The company has developed a regional maintenance demonstration program for paratransit vehicles in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
