Society of Mt Carmel

The Society of Mount Carmel in Darien, IL is a community of Carmelite friars who live in a prophetic and contemplative stance of prayer, common life, and service. Inspired by the traditions of Elijah and Mary, they follow the Carmelite Rule and have been witnessing spiritual transformation for over eight hundred years in various countries including the United States, Canada, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras.

The Society is led by a dedicated leadership team consisting of Father Carl J Markelz, O.Carm. as the Prior Provincial, Father David D McEvoy, O.Carm. as the Vice Prior Provincial, Father Nepomuk Willemsen, O.Carm. as the First Councilor, Father Luis Jesús Paz Acosta, O.Carm. as the Second Councilor, Father Jorge Monterroso Mérida as the Third Councilor, and Father Samuel Citero as the Fourth Councilor. Together, they oversee the ministries of the Society, which include serving in parishes, high schools, and retreat houses across the Americas.
