Since 1970, Springfield Memorial Hospital has been a teaching hospital affiliated with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine for the purpose of providing clinical training for residents. Designated by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, SMH provides Memorial Heart and Vascular Services, Memorial Rehab Services, Emergency Services, Family Maternity, Regional Cancer Center, Regional Burn Center, Orthopedic Services, Memorial Behavioral Services and Memorial Transplant Services for area patients. SMH has earned four consecutive Magnet® designations from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence — an accomplishment so prestigious that only 2% of hospitals in the country have done it. SMH is part of Memorial Health, a community-based, non-profit organization that delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in support of our mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve.

Dr. Mark Hansen received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, where he served as chief resident. He is board certified in internal medicine.
