The National University Rail Center of Excellence (NURail CoE), established in May 2024, is a consortium of nine universities led by the Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Funded by a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the center focuses on developing innovations that promote a safer, more efficient, sustainable, equitable, and reliable rail transportation system in the United States.

Originally launched in 2012 with a $3.5 million grant, NURail functioned as a collaborative effort among seven universities that aimed to enhance rail education, research, workforce development, and technology transfer until funding concluded in September 2020. The consortium engages in various outreach and educational projects, including K-12 STEM programs, to inspire the next generation of leaders in the railroad sector.
