Northmoor Observatory
The Peoria Astronomical Society (PAS) operates two observatories, including the Decker Grebner Van Zandt Observatory, also known as Jubilee Observatory, which was established in 1974 to provide a dark-sky location for astronomical observation away from the growing light pollution of Peoria. The observatory features a 24-inch Newtonian reflector and a 14-inch Schmidt Cassegrain telescope, with a rich history of community involvement and development by PAS members.
Northmoor Observatory, located in Donovan Park, houses a historic 9-inch refractor telescope originally built in 1913 and has been a cornerstone for public astronomy in Illinois since its dedication in 1955. The observatory underwent significant renovations in 2009 and continues to offer exceptional views of celestial objects, supported by the dedication of PAS volunteers and community donations.
