Newton is the county seat of Jasper County, Illinois. The population was 3,069 at the 2000 Census and subsequently reported as 3,141 by a local newspaper in mid-2000. Newton is home to a large coal-fired power plant and Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area.

Newton is located at 38°59?17?N 88°9?52?W / 38.98806°N 88.16444°W / 38.98806; -88.16444 (38.988119, -88.164390). The town is located in the geographic center of Jasper County on a bluff overlooking the Embarras River.
