The Institute for Global Communications (IGC) was established in collaboration with several San Francisco Bay Area non-profits in the early 1980s, aiming to create a computer network to support peace-promoting initiatives and reduce the risks of war. Initially utilizing dial-up modems and a command line interface, IGC evolved to embrace the Internet and World Wide Web, significantly enhancing the growth and effectiveness of organizations through digital collaboration tools.
As a founding member of the Association for Progressive Communications, IGC played a crucial role in fostering similar services worldwide, contributing to the development of progressive communication technologies. After ceasing operations on June 30, 2017, IGC assisted in transitioning its remaining users to Web Networks, an APC member organization based in Canada.
