More than 50,000 residents in Hoffman Estates, Ill., and a population of more than 67,000 in the daytime are served by the Hoffman Estates Police Department. The department consists of more than 100 full-time sworn officers, nearly 50 civilian personnel, approximately 40 vehicles and two canine units. It serves a land area of 22.1 square miles. The village of Hoffman Estates was incorporated in 1959, at which time a formal police department was established. The initial employees hired as sworn police officers came from previous police backgrounds. The newly formed force was composed of approximately 10 officers.
