The MacArthur Foundation is a private, independent grant-making institution dedicated to helping groups and individuals foster lasting improvement in the human condition. In December 1978, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation made its first two grants. Though virtually every field of endeavor or locale is open to the foundation, its business interests primarily include international peace and security, conservation and sustainable development, population and reproductive health, global challenges, initiative in the Russian Federation, Nigeria, and research and writing competition.
